What a fractional CMO costs,

and what the fee should buy.

Most fractional CMOs charge between $3,000 and $25,000 a month, or $150 to $500 an hour. Where a business lands depends on scope, time, and whether the role advises leadership or leads the team.

A fractional CMO gives a business senior marketing leadership for part of the week, without the cost of a full-time executive. Published 2026 pricing guides put most monthly retainers between about $3,000 and $25,000, with hourly advisory work between $150 and $500. For comparison, a full-time CMO in the U.S. averages $225,908 in base salary and $293,575 in total cash compensation, according to Built In, before benefits, payroll taxes and recruiting fees.

Three ways fractional CMOs price their work

Monthly retainers are the most common. You pay a set fee for an agreed scope and level of involvement, usually over a multi-month term. Hourly rates suit occasional advice or a second opinion on a plan. Project fees cover a defined piece of work, such as a marketing plan or a channel review, and typically run $5,000 to $25,000.

The ranges are wide because the title covers very different roles. A fractional CMO advising a founder a few hours a month and one leading a marketing team and its agencies two days a week may share a title, but not a price.

How it compares with a full-time CMO or an agency

A full-time CMO brings daily leadership, but adds salary, bonus, benefits and a long search. At Built In’s averages, a full-time CMO’s cash compensation alone comes to roughly $24,000 a month, before any of those other costs.

An agency executes campaigns, but its advice can be shaped by the services, media and technology it sells. A fractional CMO sits between the two: senior, independent judgment on a part-time basis, with execution handled by your team, freelancers or an agency.

Four things that drive the price

1. The scope of the role

Advising leadership on strategy costs less than leading a team, managing agencies and owning results. Be clear about which one you need before comparing quotes.

2. Time and involvement

Most engagements are priced around hours per week or days per month. More time costs more, and it should also mean more of the work gets done.

3. The length of the engagement

Ongoing leadership is usually priced as a monthly retainer over a set term. A one-time need, such as a plan or a review, is often better scoped and priced as a project.

4. The complexity of the business

Several channels, markets, products or partners take more senior time than one focused challenge. A clear brief keeps the scope, and the fee, matched to what you need.

Questions to ask before you hire

  • What is included each month, and what is billed separately?

  • Who does the work: the senior person you met, or someone on their team?

  • Does the consultant earn anything from the media, tools or vendors they recommend?

  • How will success be measured, and when will you review it together?
