Retail data now follows shoppers to TV.

Proof still needs a second look.

Walmart Connect is taking its shopper data to Spotify, live TV and more streaming screens. The reach is real, so the question worth asking is who confirms the results.

Retail media used to live on the retailer's own site and app. Now it is moving into music, podcasts and live television, with sales measurement attached. That can be a strong option for brands sold at Walmart. It also puts more weight on how results are measured and who is doing the measuring.

What happened

On October 6, 2026, Walmart Connect announced new options with Warner Bros. Discovery, Spotify and Yahoo DSP at its annual partner event. Through the Walmart DSP, advertisers can now use Walmart audiences to target live linear TV on TBS, TLC, truTV, HLN and Food Network, alongside Warner Bros. Discovery's streaming inventory. Walmart says this is the first time its audiences can be used for addressable targeting on live linear TV.

With Spotify, advertisers can reach Walmart customers across music, podcasts and video, with closed-loop measurement that ties ads to Walmart purchases. A connected TV test with Yahoo DSP, which began with Walmart-owned Vizio, has moved into an alpha phase, and Walmart plans to add more publishers. The push comes as the business grows fast. Walmart Connect's U.S. business grew 43% in the second quarter, excluding Vizio, and global ad revenue grew 38%.

Why it matters for brands

Linking ad exposure to actual store and online sales is a real step forward, especially for TV and audio, which have long been hard to tie to purchases. For brands that sell through Walmart, it offers reach outside the store with a clearer line to the register.

The same company now supplies the audience, sells the media and reports the sales result. That does not make the numbers wrong, but it does mean brands should understand the method. A sale after an ad is not the same as a sale caused by an ad, and that difference is where budgets are won or wasted.

Four questions to ask

1. Who measures the results?

Ask whether results come only from the retailer's own reporting or can be checked by a third party or your own data. Independent validation does not need to be complex. Even a simple cross-check against your own sales trends adds confidence.

2. How is incrementality proven?

Ask whether the retailer uses holdout or control groups, and how those groups are built. Without a fair comparison, a report may credit ads for sales that would have happened anyway. That is common with loyal, repeat shoppers.

3. What counts as a conversion?

Clarify the attribution window, whether online and in-store sales are both included, and how halo sales on related products are treated. Small definition changes can move reported return a great deal, so agree on them before launch.

4. How does it fit the wider plan?

Retail-powered TV and audio should be compared with the rest of your media on the same terms. If one channel is judged by its seller's reporting and another by your own tests, the comparison is uneven. Set common goals and measures across channels first.

Use the data, verify the outcome

Retail data in TV and audio can help brands reach likely buyers and see what happens at checkout. We see it as a useful tool, not a final verdict. The brands that gain the most will pair the retailer's reporting with clear test design and a measure they control themselves.

Questions to ask your team

  • Do we know how each retail media partner measures sales results?

  • Have we run a holdout test on any retail media campaign?

  • Are our attribution windows consistent across channels?

  • Which results can we confirm with our own sales data?
