Your search ads can now appear in AI Mode.

Your reports can't see it yet.

Google is testing standard Search campaigns in AI Mode, its conversational search experience. The reach is real, but the measurement isn't there yet.

Until recently, advertisers reached AI Mode mainly through AI Max, Performance Max or broad match. In September, Google confirmed a small experiment that lets exact and phrase match keywords serve text ads there when intent is clear. Google reports more than one billion monthly AI Mode users, so even a limited test deserves a plan. Here is how we would approach it.

What changed, and what didn't

Google's Ads Liaison called the change "a small experiment that recently kicked off," in comments reported by Search Engine Roundtable on September 4, 2026. Ads from these campaigns are eligible only where a query shows explicit, direct intent. Google still points advertisers to AI Max and Performance Max for longer, conversational questions and newer formats such as Highlighted Answers.

What hasn't changed is visibility. There is no AI Mode campaign type and no AI Mode view in Google Ads reporting, according to Search Engine Land's October 9 overview. Ads that serve in AI Mode are counted with the rest of your Search results, so you can't yet tell how that placement performs on its own.

How often ads show up

One early benchmark comes from SE Ranking, which checked 50,032 US commercial keywords in AI Mode on June 30, 2026, as reported by Search Engine Land. Text ads appeared on 29.45% of them. The rate rose with cost per click, reaching 53.56% for keywords at $10 or more.

This is a single vendor's study, from one day, before Google confirmed the exact and phrase match test, and SE Ranking notes that AI Mode results vary by session. Treat it as a signal, not a forecast. Its more useful finding may be the gap between paid and earned presence: only 11.53% of advertiser domains were also cited in the AI answer for the keyword they advertised on.

Four things to consider

1. Set expectations early

If your Search numbers shift in the coming months, AI Mode may be part of the reason, but the platform alone won't prove it. Agree now on which metrics matter and how your team will read changes in click-through rate, cost per click and conversion rate. That keeps a placement test from turning into a budget debate.

2. Protect your brand terms

Review how branded and high-value exact match keywords perform, and watch your search terms closely. Since May, the search terms report has shown AI-interpreted intent rather than only typed queries, as reported by PPC Land. Check that your negatives and brand protections still do what you expect.

3. Measure outside the platform

Platform reporting won't isolate AI Mode, so lean on what you control: clean conversion tracking, CRM or sales data, and planned tests with clear before and after periods. On the organic side, Search Console now reports impressions in generative AI features, which helps complete the picture.

4. Make your pages answer-ready

Google says AI Mode questions run nearly three times longer than traditional searches. Landing pages need to answer the specific question a person asked, with clear facts on price, availability and fit. The same clarity helps your content earn citations in AI answers, which ads alone don't buy.

A new placement, not a new strategy

AI Mode is worth preparing for, not panicking about. For most brands, the work is good search practice: clear goals, protected brand terms, reliable measurement and pages that answer real questions. We'd rather you start now, while the test is small, than scramble once the placement scales.

Questions to ask your team

  • Which of our keywords could now serve ads in AI Mode?

  • How will we explain Search changes we can't attribute?

  • Are our brand terms and negatives still working as intended?

  • Do our landing pages answer the questions customers ask?
